The Magic of Short Stories

What I love most about short stories is how they can do so much with so little space. They are microcosms of incredibly detailed worlds, inspirations for countless other ideas. They do what they want to do and elegantly. Short stories are to novels like what poetry is to prose. And this special purpose of short stories, as well as poetry, is the ancient one: the fable. Something to be retold through the ages, something enrapturing, vital, something that sticks not just because of its length but its wonder. It survives for our survival.
